Connect your IONOS domain

Put your Looops website on a domain you bought at IONOS. One click if IONOS offers automatic setup for your domain, or two DNS records added by hand in about five minutes.

Bought your domain at IONOS? This page walks you through connecting it to your Looops website, from the Looops side and the IONOS side. When you are done, both www.yourbusiness.com and yourbusiness.com show your site, with HTTPS included.

Custom domains are available on paid plans (Personal and Pro). If you do not have a domain yet, you can buy one inside Looops and skip this page entirely.

Before you start

  • You need the IONOS login for the account that holds the domain.
  • If your domain currently points at another website (an old site, a parked page, or an IONOS website builder), connecting it to Looops replaces that. Visitors will see your Looops site instead.
  • Make sure your Looops site is published first, so there is something to show when the domain goes live.

Step 1: add the domain in Looops

Open the Domain settings

In the builder, click your project name (top left), choose Website settings, then Domain, and pick Connect a domain you own.

Type your domain

Enter it as www.yourbusiness.com. Looops checks whether IONOS can set it up automatically for you.

What happens next depends on what the screen shows you.

Option A: one click, IONOS sets up the records

If you see a button that says Connect automatically with IONOS, you are in luck: IONOS will add the records for you.

Click Connect automatically with IONOS

You are taken to IONOS. Log in if asked.

Approve the change

IONOS shows you exactly which records Looops is asking for: one for www and one for the bare domain. Confirm.

You are sent back to Looops

Looops confirms the connection and sets up the security certificate. Your site is usually live on your domain within a few minutes.

Good to know
  • Nothing changes at IONOS until you confirm on their screen. If you close it or cancel, no records are touched.
  • IONOS only changes the two records Looops needs. Your email records and anything else stay as they are.
  • If IONOS reports a problem, Looops tells you and shows the manual records instead (Option B). You can also try the button again.

Option B: add two records at IONOS yourself

If the automatic button is not offered, the screen shows the two records to add, each with a copy button. Here is where they go at IONOS. Keep the Looops screen open in another tab so you can copy the values.

Step-by-step at IONOS

Open your domain

Log in at ionos.com, open Domains & SSL, and click your domain.

Add the record for the bare domain

Open the DNS tab. If there is already an A record with the hostname @, delete it. Then click Add Record, choose A, hostname @, and paste the address shown in Looops (it starts with 34.). Save.

Open the www subdomain

Go back to the list next to your domain, click the gear icon under Actions, and choose Manage Subdomains. IONOS keeps the www records here rather than on the main DNS tab.

Add the record for www

Next to www.yourbusiness.com, click the gear icon and choose DNS. If a record for www already exists, delete it. Then Add Record, choose CNAME, hostname www, and paste the value shown in Looops (it ends in looops.site). Save.

Back in Looops, click Verify

IONOS changes usually take 5 to 60 minutes to spread. Looops also checks on its own for a couple of minutes after you add the domain. Once it sees the records, the security certificate is set up automatically.

Troubleshooting

The automatic button is not showing

Automatic setup depends on IONOS offering it for your specific domain. If the button does not appear, Option B works for every IONOS domain and takes about five minutes.

Verify keeps failing
  1. Check both records match exactly what the Looops screen shows: the A record for @ and the CNAME for www.
  2. Make sure there is only one record for @ and one for www. An old record with the same name blocks the new one.
  3. Remember that the www record lives under Manage Subdomains at IONOS, not on the main DNS tab.
  4. Wait a little longer. Some changes take up to an hour to spread.
The bare domain shows an IONOS page

IONOS sometimes leaves a forwarding or parking setting on the bare domain. In your domain's settings at IONOS, turn off any forwarding, then check the A record for @ again.
